Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Neisseria gonorrhoeae (N. gonorrhoeae) is a species of coffee bean-shaped diplococci bacteria responsible for the sexually transmitted infection called gonorrhea. Symptoms of infection with N. gonorrhoeae may vary, depending on the site of infection. Note also that 10% of infected males and 80% of infected females are asymptomatic. Men who have had a gonorrhea infection have a significantly increased risk of having prostate cancer. N. gonorrhoeae can also cause conjunctivitis, pharyngitis, proctitis or urethritis, prostatitis, and orchitis.

Specimen Requirements - cervical, urethral, conjunctival swabs, urine sediment, prostatic and seminal liquid
